Come and UXtalk

by

(English version follows.)

Part of our objectives this year at UXMTL is to facilitate more discussion and knowledge sharing on UX in Montreal.

This is why we’re organising a monthly conversation event: UXtalk.

This isn’t a panel of experts, and it won’t be someone presenting on stage while you sit and listen. We want to create a space that encourages open learning, active listening and constructive conversation about UX. As someone interested in UX — whether you are a project manager, a developer or a designer—you’re welcome to share your thoughts, questions and experience.

Conversation topics are voted or suggested by the community. If you haven’t already done so, go and cast your vote to help determine our next topics.

Our first UXtalk will be on: “How does UX fit in a project?”

Venue: Divan Orange, 4234 Bd. St-Laurent
Date: February 24, 2010
Time: 5:30pm to 8:00pm
Capacity: 25 participants
Price: Free

Drinks and snacks available for purchase at Divan Orange.

Sign-up here! The event is limited to 25 participants, sessions will be recorded whenever possible and recordings will be made available.

Discussion night: “What do your customers experience?”

by

(English translation follows.)

  • Daniel Drouet, Associé à Montreal Start Up

Date : mercredi 25 novembre 2009
Heure : de 18h à 20h
Lieu : O Patro Vys, 356 Mont-Royal Est (carte)
Prix : Gratuit ! Inscrivez-vous sur Eventbrite
Boissons disponible au bar.

Nous remercions nos commanditaires pour leur soutien :

It seems an innocent question to ask: how do we know when our designs are successful? How well do we know the users of our web applications, so that we can design an engaging experience? What methods can we employ in a design process that will help us to continually understand our customers’ mindsets? What is the true value of user experience (UX) design?

As the year draws to a close, we at UXTML thought it might be a good time for reflection. We want to unearth salient points where the skills of UX practitioners and the needs of business meet. So, we’ve invited a panel of esteemed speakers representing startups, enterprises, agencies and investors in Montreal to share their perspective with us. After the panel, there will be an open discussion about what we can collectively do to raise the profile and professionalism of user experience design in Montreal. These discussions will help define the goals for UXMTL in 2010.

The following panelists have kindly donated their time, energy and intellect:

  • Joël Pomerleau, Assistant Director, Accessibility and Digital Enterprises, NFB
  • Sylvain Carle, Co-Founder and CTO at Praized Media
  • Daniel Drouet, partner at Montreal Start Up
  • Marian Kolev, Creative Director at Bluesponge
  • David Rollert, VP Interaction Design at Pheromone

Come and join us for an evening of conversation and fruitful discussion! Here’s your chance to speak out on how UX can support the growing excellence of technology, creative arts and media in Montreal.

A first step

by

Yesterday evening, 8 people met for the first time to discuss what UXMTL means, and began the first steps of establishing a direction for an active UX community in Montreal. Among this small initial core group, we have leaders in existing local groups, as well as enthusiastic and experienced UX professionals who volunteered to step up when UXMTL was announced about a month ago.

My thanks to: Jonathan Bélisle, Georges Duverger, Etienne Garbugli, Shai Idelson, AJ Kandy, David Rollert, Guillaume Thoreau. Thanks also to Nathalie Berger who wasn’t able to make it in person, but is nonetheless helping us to clarify this initiative through her active leadership with Utilisabilité Quebec.

During the meeting, we spent some time thinking over the landscape of UX in Montreal. The goal is not to start “yet another group”; rather it is to provide and define a space for collaboration between the many roles that revolve around UX . We want to create a dynamic that serves not only today’s UX practitioners, the people we influence and who influence us — such as our teams and managers — but also today’s students who would be tomorrow’s professionals.

Before we begin looking into how we want to concretely achieve this vision over the next weeks, we would love to hear from you! We think it’s important to identify problems well before we begin working on solutions ;) Help us solidify these objectives by telling us what you think and leave a comment:

  • If you are UX practitioner today, how do you think UX is perceived in your workplace?
  • If you are not a UX practitioner, what role do you think UX has in relation to what you do?

(Also, if you are dying to help shape this initiative, feel free to leave a comment on the original post, or contact @uxmtl on Twitter.)</p

The beginning

by

As more and more startups come to life in Montreal, there is an emerging need for local expertise in user experience, interaction design and product design that fits with the dynamic and daring innovative spirit of the startup world. UXMTL is an initiative to extend the UX community in Montreal to encompass this direction, and to create an ecosystem where ideas and resources from differing facets of UX can be shared. We have grander visions, of course, but let’s start small.

Interested in helping to shape this initiative or being involved? It’s early days yet; we are looking for ideas and people who would like to take this forward. Drop us a line on Twitter: @uxmtl, or leave a comment on this post.

In the meantime, this blog will serve as a hub for all those messages that don’t fit in 140 characters ;)
